Shaped cake pans are the perfect beginning to any great party or get together. A cake is always a lot of fun, and that enjoyment is multiplied when it’s fun and festive shaped. There aren’t a lot of things that make a kid any happier on his or her birthday than a cake of their favorite cartoon character or activity (except maybe the toys to match!).
For most, the preparation of the cake is the highlight. Extra hands are always needed to decorate, taste, and lick the beaters. In my home, baking cakes is a family event and I’m sure that it’s the same in yours. If you’re using a cake mix, one batch will generally be perfect for a shaped cake pan. You want the mix to fill the pan 1/2 to 2/3 full so that it rises to the top without having a muffin top. I usually follow the recipe for the cake mix, and get good results. If you’re unsure, use the Betty Crocker temperature (350 degrees) and cook for 30-40 minutes, until a toothpick can be removed cleanly.

Character cake pans are most popular for kids. They come in every character imaginable; from Spongebob to Barbie. Kids make their favorite characters well known, and I’m sure that there is one that matches his or her favorite. I’ve always loved the way that their eyes light up when they see the cake all done! Priceless!
My favorite thing about cartoon cake pans is that the characters are fairly simple designs and easier to decorate. With the larger blocks of solid colors, you can either use a bag of icing, or use a square spatula to smooth it on. You can also pipe all of the borders with solid black, which make the details much clearer. All character shaped cake pans will have a list of the colors and tips that are needed to decorate the cake. If you’ve baked cakes in the past, you’ll probably have most of them on hand already.
