Shaped Cake Pans

Wilton Spiderman Cake Pan

Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman has a great shaped cake pan that will make any Spidey fan ecstatic when they see it.  This cake pan is updated from the one that we had when we were younger and has much more “attitude” than its old-school counterpart.

This is not a very easy cake.  It takes me back to being a kid and trying to draw Spiderman.  His body and head isn’t very hard, but getting the web lines on his costume is pretty tricky.  Luckily, there are grooves in the baked cake for you to follow so you can stay on track.

Character cake molds like this one come with instructions that show you what to do and what supplies (coloring, tips, etc.) you’re going to need.

This is a Wilton shaped cake pan, which means that you’re getting great quality at an awesome price.  If you were able to find this cake in your area it would cost around $20.  Right now Amazon has it for less than $15 and it qualifies for free shipping if your order is over $25.

Wilton Guitar Cake Pan

This is an aluminum Wilton shaped cake pan that would be perfect the music lover in your life.  I love this cake pan because of its many uses.  This works just as well for an adult’s birthday cake as it does for a kids.

Another great thing about this cake mold is that it can be decorated as easily or as complex as you wish.  This would be a great beginner cake, or an advanced cake mold depending on how you wish to decorate it.

A trick that I learned for icing the guitar strings is to find a straight-edge, like a ruler or yardstick, and gently press it into the cake before trying to pipe the lines.  Straight lines are tricky with an icing bag, and the indent gives you a good line to follow to help it turn out better.

The cake mold is made by Wilton, so you get uncompromising quality at an awesome price.  This shaped cake pan retails for around $20 when found locally, but Amazon.com has it for under $13 right now and it’s eligible for free shipping with orders over $25.

Alternatively, you can check out eBay for the guitar cake pan. They tend to have lower prices than Amazon. This is great when you only want to get the pan. If you’re planning on getting more than pan, Amazon will help you get everything that you need and have it all shipped to your house. Below you’ll find the current eBay listings for this pan where you’ll be able to bid on or buy them.

Birthday Cake Pans

shaped cake pansShaped birthday cake pans are what takes a plain cake to extraordinary.  Even something as simple as a square or teardrop can make a birthday cake feel like it’s special.  It shows people that you really care enough to create them a custom cake, rather than the “plain Jane” cakes that we all get.  That’s a major part of the reason I started this site in the first place.  I love baking cakes that fit someone’s personality and style, and I love the way that it makes them feel.

Baking cakes is cool again thanks to popular TV shows and cake competitions all over the country.  If you develop some skill with baking and decorating cakes, you will be the hit of every party that you go to and you may even be able to start a business out of it!

We are all trained to expect the rectangular birthday cakes with insanely sweet frosting that come from grocery store.  That’s what we’re used to since it’s much easier to go buy one instead of creating one.  You’re obviously here because you either don’t like those cakes or you really want to create something special for a loved one.  I applaud your efforts, and you’re going to make someone very happy!

Birthday Cake Pans

Birthday shaped cake pans can range from a set of simple squares up to an elaborate football stadium or train set.  The pans that you choose should match the party or the person that the party is for.  Birthdays are a special event, and a well planned cake will make it even more special!

Kids birthday cakes are easy.  You figure out what their favorite cartoon character is and find the pan to match.  Almost popular cartoon characters have their own shaped cake pan.  Bob The Builder, Dora The Explorer, and Spongebob are all some of the most popular cake pans right now.  The classics like Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, and Barbie will always be around, but are becoming harder to track down.

Grownup cakes don’t always depend so much on the cake shape, but on it’s decoration.  My favorite cake pans are a set of three squares from Wilton that are the perfect sizes to stack on top of each other and decorate from there.  I always start with a smooth layer of icing, or a sheet of fondant, and add things from their life or personality from there.  Another design that I like to do is come up with a pattern or swirls that fit their style well.  These small touches are really what takes a cake to the next level.

All great birthday cakes start with the right shaped cake pan.  Be sure that it’s the right one for you before you get baking!

Where To Buy Shaped Cake Pans

Shaped Cake PansThe options for buying shaped cake pans has dwindled over the years.  I remember being able to walk into my local grocery store and seeing a wall of cake pans in every shape and character available.  Unfortunately, this isn’t the case anymore.  Now, you need to find a large kitchen supply store or hit the internet.  Good news though!  We sell shaped cake pans right here on shapedcakepans.net through Amazon and eBay, so you’re already halfway there!

Shaped Cake Pans On The Internet

I chose to use Amazon to sell cake molds because they are the only online retailer that has pans from all around the world.  They have ten times the selection than I could carry on my own!  Another great thing about Amazon is that they have the best prices around and very fast shipping.  I buy my pans from them!

eBay is also great because of their fantastic prices and huge selection of retired and new cake pans.

There are other stores around the web that carry cake pans as well.  One thing to watch out for is that many of the character shaped cake pans they carry are not the licensed versions and look a little funny.  If that’s okay with you, you could probably save a couple bucks on your pan.

Shaped Cake Pan Stores

If you come across a store that carries lots of cake pans, consider yourself blessed!  They’re becoming much harder to find in traditional stores, and finding the exact one that you want can be difficult.  Most kitchen supply stores will carry the regular circle pans, springforms, and a few shapes, but when you need a specific shape or size the internet is a much safer bet.

Sometimes, stores like Wal-Mart or Michael’s will have pans but it seems like even this is happening less and less.  Baking cakes is becoming much more popular as of late, so this may turn around, but for now it’s hard to track them down.

Another great place to find shaped cake baking pans is garage sales.  As I’m sure you know, garage sales are very hit or miss, so I wouldn’t bank on this method.  What you should do is look at every yard sale you’re at, and if you find some buy them all!  It’s just like hitting the jackpot!

The internet is the best place to find exactly what you’re looking for.  Always be on the lookout for shaped cake pans everywhere you go, and stock up if you find a good price!

On a side note, if you happen to find a shaped cake pan that looks like a giant donut, let me know!  I’ve been looking for one for years!

Here are the most current listings on eBay. They have almost every cake pan imaginable, and if you don’t see the one that you need use the search box on the top to easily track it down.

Choosing A Shaped Cake Pan

Shaped Cake PansThere are quite a few things to consider when buying a shaped cake pan.  It might seem like you just buy one, take it home and bake, but there are some other things you need to think about first.  Most importantly, the cake has to match the theme of what you’re baking it for.  Also, your skill level must be in line with the cake.  There aren’t a lot of things that are more frustrating than staring at a cake that you’re having trouble finishing!

Where’s The Party?

Choosing a shaped cake pan for some types of parties is extremely easy, you match the cake to the character that the kid is in love with.  Other situations aren’t so easy.

This is especially true with grown-up parties.  If you’re hosting a bachelorette party, your first thought is to probably find an “anatomical” cake pan that would be a hit with the ladies, but consider where the party is going to be and if there will be other people around to make sure that’s appropriate.  I’ve actually been at a party where there was a penis shaped cake pan and they were asked to get rid of the cake by the manager of the bar!  It’s pretty embarrassing!  Obviously, not everywhere is going to be that conservative, just know your audience.

Also, consider how much cake you’re going to need.  If one cake is not going to be enough, don’t waste your time decorating two cakes!  Find a rectangular cake pan that will fit your shaped cake on top of it, smooth icing onto the square cake, and put your shaped cake on top.  Secure them together with straws, but be sure to put the straws in before the top cake is decorated.  This makes for a huge cake that also looks really professional.

Is This Your First Time?

Poorly decorated cakes are embarrassing.  The worst thing is that no one will tell you that it doesn’t look right!  Finding a shaped cake pan that matches your skill level is extremely important.  If the cake is way too hard to decorate, you’ll become very frustrated and not happy with the final outcome.

Cartoon character shaped cakes are a good place to start.  They have large areas that are the same color and not a lot of detail.  Spongebob is just a big yellow block with eyes and pants!  Gaining confidence with these easier cakes will help you out a lot down the road.

If you’re new to icing cakes, take a piece of cardboard or thick paper, draw out a rough sketch of some of the trickier parts of your cake, and ice those with the bag.  This is a great way to learn how to use icing bags and what each tip does, all without risking the cake!

Remember what your audience is like and find a shaped cake pan that matches your skill to get the best results from your cake.  It’s not hard once you get the hang of it, and you’ll have a new skill that you can use the rest of your life!

Decorating Shaped Cakes

Shaped Cake PansAfter you’ve picket out your shaped cake pan, got the supplies, and baked the cake, the hard part is behind you right? If this is your first time, you may be thinking that decorating a cake like this is like a coloring book. After you’ve decorated a few cakes it certainly is, but the first time around is a bit tricky. Read on, and I’ll show you some tips and tricks that will make your life a bit easier.

I seriously cannot stress how important it is that your cake is cool before you begin. The last thing you want is to have Super Mario’s shoe slide right off the cake! That’s what will happen if the cake is not cool. Also, keep in mind that the cake is finishing its cooking while it’s cooling. If you alter the speed that it cools, you’ll change the texture of the cake. So don’t put it in the fridge, leave it on your cooling sheet for at least four hours.

Surprisingly, the directions that come with these shaped cake pans are very helpful and will probably be all you need to get the job done. There are a few tricks that you can use that will make your life much easier. Most importantly, if you’ve never done this before spend some time practicing with the icing bag. Use a piece of paper to doodle around on so that you get a feel for how changing the pressure changes the lines.

If you are decorating a large space that serves as a background or something else not important, don’t waste your time with the icing bag! Use a square spatula to spread the icing instead. The smooth effect will make your piping work much more pronounced.

Be sure to go thick with your black borders and outlines. This makes it much easier to fill in everything else and creates a cleaner look because of the defined edges. I usually use a #5 tip for this part.

If you need to have a smooth area that is very small (buttons, eyes, teeth), dip your finger in a bit of water and smooth it with that. This really only works if it’s one color, and too much water will smear the icing all over the place!

You may want to decorate your cake in a different way than the instructions ask you to, so at least get the tips that it specifies on the cake pan and go crazy with the colors.

When shopping for shaped cake pans make sure that you choose something that is within your abilities. There is nothing more frustrating than having a cake that is too hard to decorate and not being able to finish it!
