Decorating sphere cakes can be a serious pain. There are so many places for you to mess it up it can be difficult to get started. Fear not though, with a few tips and practice you can successfully decorate a baseball cake. The first tool you need is a lazy susan since the cake will have to move around, or you’re going to have to figure out a way to move around it (no bueno!). Second, the cake has to be decorated on the plate or board that it will end up on since you can’t move it once it’s covered in icing. Third, decorate from the bottom up, using the base as a reference for your first lines. Doing this will help make sure that your lines are straight. Lastly, be sure that you trace out all of the baseball’s seams before trying to ice them. That isn’t something that you can just “wing” and have it come out well!

Pirate Ship Cake Pan by Nordic Ware

Aargh Matey! This pirate ship cake pan by Nordic Ware is perfect for the land loving pirate in your life.

I’m not going to fluff anything up to help get a sale. This cake is hard to decorate! There are a lot of little minute details that are on the top of the ship, and the sails will have to be built. I helped a friend decorate this cake, she was in over her head and called me for assistance. Cake molds like this take a very steady hand with the icing bag, and an eye for detail.

When we built the sails we struggled to come up with a good design. You’ll see in the picture on the main page or the Amazon page that they built one mast right in the middle. We used chopsticks for the masts and built sails on the front and back with black canvas.

Norpro Checkerboard Cake Pan Set

A checkerboard cake is just about the most surprising cake around. Using this shaped cake pan will create a checkerboard of vanilla and chocolate (or whatever flavors you want) inside the cake. No one will know until you cut it open and everyone can see!

This set comes with three nine inch circular cake pans with one divider that creates the symmetrical checkerboard inside. You’ll have to cook each of the cakes separately since there is only one divider, but the effect is well worth it!

A trick that I learned with this is to use the darkest chocolate cake mix you can find. The darker the mix, the better it creates a separation with the white cake. Using a German chocolate or dark chocolate mix is best. You can also use a mix that is richer than you would normally like since the vanilla will balance it out.

If you’ve never baked a checkerboard cake, relax, they’re really easy. If you can successfully bake a regular cake you can bake the checkerboard. I added this picture in so that you can see more closely

This mini ball shaped cake pan is perfect for making individual cakes. You can decorate the balls however you wish. I’ve made baseballs and basketballs, but you could do golf balls, globes, the Death Star, or bowling balls.

It’s one shaped cake pan with six cavities. You’ll bake one set of balls then ice the flat part and push them together to make a full sphere. One cake mix will yield between 9 and 12 balls. The finished balls are a little bigger than a regular sized cupcake.

Due to them being spherical, they can be pretty tricky to decorate. I usually put them together first so that I can decorate the entire ball, but some people prefer to decorate a half at a time and clean up the fingerprints afterward.

Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman has a great shaped cake pan that will make any Spidey fan ecstatic when they see it. This cake pan is updated from the one that we had when we were younger and has much more “attitude” than its old-school counterpart.

This is not a very easy cake. It takes me back to being a kid and trying to draw Spiderman. His body and head isn’t very hard, but getting the web lines on his costume is pretty tricky. Luckily, there are grooves in the baked cake for you to follow so you can stay on track.

This cake is too much fun! I love the creative and 3-D shaped cake pans like this one. My main problem is actually having to cut into them!

When this cake is finished it’s a sight to see! It’s hard to make it out in the picture, but there are little bees walking around the cake. The detail on this cake mold is pretty high, so I don’t recommend it for your first cake, but if you’re ready to start challenging yourself this cake is perfect.

One really cool thing that I’ve seen done is dying the cake batter a golden color so that it looks like honey when the cake is cut open. Too cute!

This is a two piece aluminum shaped cake pan that when formed together make a ball. The two pieces are baked individually and joined together with icing. It’s fairly small in size, around 6 inches in diameter, but when together it makes for a lot of cake.

I like this cake because of its endless possibilities. You could make a baseball, a bowling ball, a basketball, a globe, the Death Star, just about anything that you want.
