Baking a large cake can be a pain when you don’t have the right tools to do the job. Large cake pans certainly help, as do the right spatulas and other accessories. Everyone has their own definition of what “large” constitutes when it comes to cake pans, so in this post I want to give you some tips for creating large cakes as well as show you the best places to find the exact cake pans that you need.
When searching for large cake pans all of your results usually turn up as cookie sheets, and that is obviously no help to us. The problem that you’re running into is that the larger the cake pan is, the more specialized it is, and is most likely only found in restaurant supply stores. Luckily, there are a few options out there, and I’ll share those with you a little bit later.
If the actual footprint of your cake isn’t important you can always get away with baking lots of smaller (10-12 inch) cakes and stacking them. This obviously creates more work since there is more baking involved, but it can get the job done without the search for the big cake pans.
I’ve heard of people building their own cake pans to suit their needs. I don’t know how to go about doing this, but if you know someone who is a metal smith they might be able to fabricate aluminum cake pans in the exact size that you need, even extra large cake pans. Just make sure that you test any cake pans like that a few times before the big show to know how they work.
I have two 17 inch large round cake pans that are very old and I don’t know where they came from, but that tells me that they are out there. So I’ve put together a set of pans that are roughly the same size, and hopefully work for you. There are so many different types and styles of this size pan that it’s difficult to know what you really need and what you don’t. In this post I’ll give you a quick run down of the different styles of 10 inch cake pan and why you would need each one, as well as where to find the best deal on the cake pan that you need.
10 Inch Round Cake Pans – A plain aluminum 10 inch pan is an absolute necessity in any kitchen. You’ll frequently use this for baking simple cakes and deep dish pizza. Having a nonstick pan isn’t necessary since these pans are very easy to grease to make sure that your cake comes out cleanly.
10 Inch Round Springform Pan – The 10 inch springform pan is the key to successful cheesecake. You have to be able to get the pan separated from the cake to prevent the cheesecake from getting torn up. If cheesecakes are your thing, you need springform pans. You can usually find these in sets at a deep discount.
10 Inch Square Cake Pan – When baking brownies, blondies, and bars you’ll usually use a 9 or 10 inch square cake pan. Most of these pans are 2-3 inches deep, which accommodates both cakes and brownies. This is also the common cake pan for baking cornbread. Most square cake pans are going to be nonstick, which really isn’t a good idea. When nonstick gets scratched it releases toxic chemicals, so using that butter knife to cut the brownies is definitely not a good idea! Go with aluminum and grease it well.
Those are the three most common types of 10 inch cake pans, but there are also hearts, stars, teardrops, and ovals. I recommend only buying the odd shapes as you need them, I made the mistake of stocking up and figuring that I’ll come up with a use and never did!

8″ Cake Pans
8″ cake pans are an absolute necessity in any kitchen. They can be used for cakes (obviously) but also for other baking jobs, cooking, and even deep dish pizza. There are so many different pans out there that it’s hard to know that you’re getting a good one at a great price. To help with this, I’ve assembled the best 8 inch cake pans from both Amazon and eBay so you can choose the one that you want and know that you didn’t spend too much on it. eBay is known for being the most affordable, but Amazon can save you lots of money as well with their shipping policies.
Most 8″ cake pans are made from aluminum and require that they be greased to prevent sticking. You can grease with butter, shortening, or a baking spray to prevent this. My favorite is spray canola oil for the texture that it adds to the cake, but you can use whichever you prefer. There are also nonstick versions of many of these pans, but in my opinion these aren’t really necessary since it doesn’t take too much to keep a regular aluminum pan from sticking. Springform pans also work great. They have a snap enclosure that allows you to undo the clasp after the cake is ready to free it from the pan.

Nordicware cake pans are some of the highest quality pans around. They are the types of pans that you would find in a high end bakery or professional cake decorator shop. The good news is that you can bring them home, and in this post I’ll show you where to find them cheap.
With Nordicware shaped cake pans you pay for their very high quality. Most pans are in the $25-$40 range, so having a lot of them is going to cost quite a bit of money. They will certainly last a lifetime and be able to be passed on to future generations so their value to price ratio is excellent.
All of their pans are crafted from heavy duty metal, and most are nonstick coated on the baking side of the pan. Due to the elaborate designs on the pans you need a quality baking spray or oil to make sure that nothing sticks. Butter or shortening will not work very well to grease these pans since you can’t get the butter into the detailed cracks and crevices in the pan.

Finding a monster truck cake pan is tricky business. There was one made a while back by Wilton and it was a very cool 3-D cake pan that was a huge monster truck. Unfortunately, that pan has since been discontinued so you’re either stuck with a replacement or having to track down the original. I’ve put together a list of some cake pans that might work as replacements, as well as real-time listings for eBay that will have the original 3-D cake pan if it is currently for sale.
Another place you can find the retired cake pans is at yard and garage sales, but tracking down the one that you need is like finding a needle in a haystack. Pantastic Cake Pans
Pantastic cake pans are pretty sweet. They’re very affordable because of their plastic construction (most pans are less than ten bucks!) and have a variety of other uses than just for cakes. The plastic construction means that Pantastic cake won’t last a lifetime like a Wilton cake pan does, but with proper care and careful handling you can easily get eight or ten uses out of them. The plastic also allows them to be very detailed in their designs, which means that if you plan on doing detailed decoration you can do a lot more with a Pantastic pan than with the traditional metal types.
You might be thinking that a plastic cake pan will just melt and cause a huge mess in the oven, but on the contrary these pans are designed to work up to 375° Fahrenheit! I’ve never actually baked a cake in the microwave, but I’m confident that it would work well with these pans.

Decorating sphere cakes can be a serious pain. There are so many places for you to mess it up it can be difficult to get started. Fear not though, with a few tips and practice you can successfully decorate a baseball cake. The first tool you need is a lazy susan since the cake will have to move around, or you’re going to have to figure out a way to move around it (no bueno!). Second, the cake has to be decorated on the plate or board that it will end up on since you can’t move it once it’s covered in icing. Third, decorate from the bottom up, using the base as a reference for your first lines. Doing this will help make sure that your lines are straight. Lastly, be sure that you trace out all of the baseball’s seams before trying to ice them. That isn’t something that you can just “wing” and have it come out well!

There are quite a few variations of penis cake pans. Some are very realistic, others are geared towards being funny, but they are all huge! This adds so much to the fun of the party.

Star Wars Cake Pan
Finding a Star Wars cake pan can be tricky. They are all out of print, and can fetch prices over $100. The good news is that they are out there, and if you know where to look you can find them for much less than that.
The cheapest way to buy Star Wars cake pans in to find them at a garage or yard sale. Doing it this way is a total shot in the dark, but it can work. Cake pans seem to be the kind of thing that people tend to sell at yard sales (along with lame books!). Keep your eyes peeled and you’ll stumble across one eventually.
I know that rummaging through garage sales doesn’t help you find a Star Wars cake pan right now, so I’ve found some for you that I want to share. Obviously, most of these pans are going to be used (they are from the early 80′s) but they should be in good condition. I bought my Darth Vader cake pan from eBay and it came to me in fantastic condition, although without instructions. Luckily, Wilton makes these cake pans so they have all of the instructions downloadable from their website.
It seems like the C-3PO cake pan is the hardest to track down, I don’t even have this pan yet! It looks really cool because it has a section off to the left of his head that will fit a good amount of text or even a Star Wars logo.
The Darth Vader cake pan is a bit of a pain to decorate. Black food coloring is hard to get and work with, so you actually end up decorating his mask in dark brown and use gel to get his eyes and the outline black. It takes a good amount of skill with the icing bag to get all of the lines to line up with the direction of the mask, but it’s certainly doable with a little bit of practice.
The R2-D2 cake pan is a lot of fun to decorate, and it’s the easiest pan of all of them to find. There are some small details on his body, but nothing is too tough so it would be a good cake pan for someone who’s just starting to get the hang of cake decoration.
There is also a Boba Fett cake pan that is very difficult to find. eBay is the still the best place, but as of this writing it’s nowhere to be found!
You also have the option of never baking with these cake pans. They have a hole at the top of the pan so that it can be easily hung up on a wall as decoration. Either way, this is the perfect gift for yourself or the Star Wars fan in your life!
